<p>This past year has been a bit of a whirlwind. Between <a href="/2025/03/09/back-to-work.html">starting one job</a>, <a href="/2025/06/22/ride-for-cancer-pinned.html">completing the 2025 Tour</a>, then in the fall <a href="/2026/01/24/the-career-reset.html">starting another job</a> where I pivoted back into hands-on development, only to find myself in the midst of the greatest upheaval the tech industry has ever seen, honestly, it’s all been a lot.</p>

<p>The result is that I have been <em>woefully</em> neglectful to my commitments around the Tour. First, and worst, I’m still not done <a href="/2025/06/22/tour-alberta-raffle.html">the socks from last year’s raffle</a> (in fact, I’m only 1.5 pairs in on that little project queue… I am Jack’s deep sense of shame). Second, I have done little to no communication around my Tour campaign for 2026.</p>

<p>And yet, despite that, somehow not only did we hit our fundraising goals, we raised more money than ever! Our own team, The Hue Crew, <a href="https://support.touralbertaforcancer.ca/team/757407">raised over $13,000</a>, while I <a href="https://support.touralbertaforcancer.ca/fundraiser/6898836">personally hit $2,815</a> thanks to support from both new donors and old.</p>

<p>It’s a easy to take the wrong lesson from that experience, but I assure you, I’ll do better next time. I swear.</p>

<p>Anyway, you’d think after five years (well, six if you count the COVID year, but that one was weird), this would all have become a bit old hat. But still every year surprises and moves me in unexpected ways. I suppose that shouldn’t be surprising. As my own life changes, so too does my relationship with, and feelings about, the Tour. And yet, I’m always a little bit blindsided by the incredible support and generosity we all receive, and this year is no different.</p>

<p>My gut kept telling me that the expected AI productivity gains claimed by the tech industry didn’t make a ton of sense, so I figured I’d just model it out. The results were both a little surprising and exactly what I expected.</p>

<p>I’ve been thinking a lot, lately, about the now-ubiquitous tech industry trend toward LLM automation of coding and the expected and anticipated productivity gains that are touted as reasonable and achievable. Every big name you can think of is driving AI adoption, not just within their products (where, there too, it’s ubiquitous), but also in their operations. The theory goes that individual ICs can be made dramatically more productive through the adoption of LLMs in their day-to-day work.</p>

<p>In these statements I’ve seen floated what felt to me like unrealistic claims about the level of acceleration that might be possible. We’re not talking 50% or 100% gains in productivity (which would be incredible). We’re talking 1000%, 5000%. Pick any number you think is reasonable. Now 10x that.</p>

<p>But I realized, as I was thinking about this, that my own reaction is based on feelings, not facts.</p>

<p>So I figured, fuck this, let’s see how far I can get with some basic modeling that might help me ground those feelings in some sort of semi-objective reality. What follows is that exploration.</p>

<p>Now, before we get into it deeply, I’m gonna be very up front, here: throughout this piece I’ll be using some <em>really</em> crappy metrics, like PR throughput, lines-of-code produced, and lines-of-code reviewed per hour. The literature on these metrics is clear: they’re flawed. LoC shares, at best, a (very) loose correlation with code complexity. PR throughput as a metric for developer productivity is worse yet than that.</p>

<p>But, the reality is these are the kinds of numbers that tend to appear when these topics are discussed, so they’re what I’ll be focusing on.</p>

<p>AI Disclaimer: To be very clear, nothing in this analysis was written by an AI. Every bit of prose on this page was put together by me. Which probably explains why it’s so stilted and wordy.</p>

<p>The model code, by contrast, was absolutely built with the help of AI, mostly because I detest building for the browser.</p>

<p>It’s also worth emphasizing this post (like everything else on this blog) reflects my own views on the industry in the wake of the AI revolution and not that of my employers, either past or present.</p>

<p>It is deeply funny to me that Anthropic straight up announced that Fable will quietly nerf itself if you try to use it to build a competitor. But don’t worry, it’s not because Anthropic is being anti-competitive. It’s because Fable is <em>so incredibly powerful</em> that it could create Skynet. It’s about <em>safety</em>, guys. Safety.</p>

<p>For a long time the tech industry revelled in the distruption of what it saw as old, legacy industries. But now, as AI takes over tech, we’re now starting to eat our own, and it’s dark and ironic.</p>

<p>If you’re not in tech you might not realize just how much of a panic has set in among the C-suite and investor class in the industry. Everyone is, of course, putting on a brave face, but as fears of a <a href="https://www.techbuzz.ai/articles/benioff-defends-salesforce-against-ai-disruption-fears">SaaS-pocalypse</a> persist and a <a href="https://studioalpha.substack.com/p/the-citrini-scare-trade-the-real">fictional financial analysis on Substack</a> caused a real sell-off in markets, it’s hard not to see the sweat on everyone’s brows.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, CEOs and CTOs are falling over themselves trying to position themselves as visionaries, with the likes of <a href="https://fortune.com/2026/02/27/block-jack-dorsey-ceo-xyz-stock-square-4000-ai-layoffs/">Jack Dorsey</a>, <a href="https://x.com/klarnaseb/status/1896698293759230429">Sebastian Siemiatkowski</a>, and <a href="https://thenewstack.io/netlify-agent-experience-engineers/">Matt Biilmann</a> each trying to out-AI-pill one another. Of course, one has to wonder how much of this is AI-washing and how much of it is intentionally eye-catching hyperbole, but these are just the most extreme and visible tip of a very large iceberg.</p>

<p>It’s hard not to enjoy the bitter irony, here. The tech industry once revelled in disruption. Whether it was Uber wiping out the taxi industry, Amazon destroying traditional bookstores, or Spotify wiping out artist revenues, time and time again we’ve seen the Silicon Valley enrich themselves by disrupting an established market and then transforming into rent seekers.</p>

<p>AI now threatens to do the same to countless professions. Everyone from writers to graphic designers to financial analysts can feel the wolf at the door.</p>

<p>But this time things are a little different.</p>

<p>This time it’s coming for tech first.</p>

<p>I timed my re-entry into the tech industry perfectly if my goal was to experience maximum chaos. I have a lot of feelings. I figured I’d write about them a bit.</p>

<p>I joined my new job back in October of last year, just a couple of months after Anthropic released Opus 4.1 and a month before the drop of Opus 4.5. For folks in the tech industry, the release of these models alongside OpenAI’s Codex, Google’s Gemini, a swath of open models from DeepSeek, Moonshot, MiniMax, and others, combined with the launch of various open and proprietary agentic coding harnesses, has rapidly changed the face of software development.</p>

<p>About a month after starting my new job I made a very conscious choice: AI tooling was already widely available and in use, and given I myself had long been an AI skeptic, I’d not spent any meaningful time with the technology. Given that gap, I chose to use a hackathon (which was conveniently scheduled just three or four weeks into my tenure) to truly immerse myself in the space. Lenore and I had been going back and forth about the idea of a simple quilt designing app, so I decided to go all-in and vibecode a prototype application.</p>

<p>And I won’t lie, dear readers: I was blown away.</p>

<p>That’s not to say there weren’t problems. My god were there problems. But I was able to do in a week what might’ve otherwise taking me a month or longer.</p>

<p>The more I work with these tools–and I work with them quite literally every single day–the more I realize just how utterly disruptive they are to the industry. I cannot be honest and deny their incredible power and utility.</p>

<p>I also cannot deny that this technology threatens lives and livelihoods, accelerates climate change, drives wider the already catastrophic wealth gap, distorts political systems, and drowns out human voices in a sea of AI slop.</p>

<p>It’s all just so damned messy.</p>
