At church yesterday one of the things we talked about along with peacemaking was the verse in Ephesians where Paul’s talking about the Covenant and how in the old Covenant ever some people who were close and some people who were far away but through Christ and in the New Covenant we are all welcome to come close to God and we were discussing how time it was the Jews and the people who had known the Torah and study to God and have been sort of the encircle The In Crowd the whole time they had to make space for the people who were far away they had to give Grace and and give time and give understanding to the people who didn’t have the same history in the same understanding and the same culture in the same rules that they did it and you can see in the New Testament sometimes they were really good at giving space and Grace and understanding sometimes they are good at it at all and there were challenges and conflicts and new rules set up basically as we got talking about that and that whole situation is making space for the people who have been far away I realize that the church has been in that cycle and system again where there’s The In Crowd there’s those of us who are close and sometimes that means people who have been raised in the church and raised in Christianity and other times that just means people who whose lifestyle paired well with the church and who fit in easily and that In Crowd has making it very very difficult for the people that they perceive as far away because it’s all our perception the wall was already broken down and Jesus already died there’s already space in God’s Kingdom for all of us but the church is built a new wall and so there’s those of us we perceive as close and then the other as we perceive as far away because their lifestyle the things they do the way they dressed Appalachian ships they’re in their activities and habits and all of those things don’t really mesh with what we tend to think of as a Christian lifestyle and and the rules and ethics that we tend to live by and we need to make space we need to make space for the people who don’t know God yet who aren’t sure if they fit who are asking questions who are seeking who are curious who are angry we need to make space for them to be who they are and to be where they are and welcomed into the kingdom because that’s the truth that’s the reality that is from God’s perspective they are part of the body and part of the Kingdom just like the rest of us who have been doing it for years and know all the ins and outs just like the Gentiles after Christ’s death they are included so how do we do that how do we make space I think the purse part is understanding what what the boundary is this wall but we have erected the verse henna Fusion respond to the people around us what rules do we require them to follow before they’re in before they’re safe before they’re allowed to be part of us what do we make people go through what standards do we set and by what right do we checked people and tell them they don’t belong if we truly believe that salvation comes through Christ Alone through his sacrifice then what right do we have to set any standard any rule any requirement yes Jesus called us to repent Jesus called us to to walk in his footsteps to follow him to love God and love others so you might make an argument for those as requirements but what does that have to do with all of these extra rules we put on people yes we want people to live transform the lives we want people to be free from the grips of sin and the consequences that come with it but that comes through transformation that comes with the inward working of the spirit that comes with the living out our salvation it takes time it takes interchange it takes healing and in the meantime we the church should be giving hope and support and love and compassion and understanding we shouldn’t be worried about being contaminated we shouldn’t be worried about what other people will think if we accept this type of person or that type of person or know that you know there’s this or that addiction or this problem and we’re standing with them anyway why is that while we were still sinners Christ died for us the other thing that stuck out to me on Sunday listening to the sermon was that what we receive from God we need to be giving to others we have received forgiveness so we need to be forgiving we have received love so we need to be loving we have received healing so we need to be there as people heal we need to offer Grace and acceptance and freedom because that’s what we have been given so how do we do that how do we make space I think the purse part is understanding what what the boundary is this wall that we have a wreckage the verse so we need to be forgiven we have received Grace so we need to be gracious we have received healing so we need to be conduit of God’s healing of restoration of reconciliation we need to stand with people and give them Grace and hope and love as God works in their hearts and in their lives
