<p>For this year's edition the Warsaw sci-fi/fantasy convention <a href="https://bazyliszek.ava.waw.pl/">Bazyliszek</a> invited a special guest: a historian and a science fiction author <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_Palmer">Ada Palmer</a> [<a href="https://www.adapalmer.com/">Homepage</a>]. Despite a long day taking parts in other panels, she agreed to give me an interview about her specialty: the history of ideas - and how it relates to our struggles with climate imagination and Solarpunk.</p>

<p>W lipcu tego roku na konwencie <a href="https://bazyliszek.ava.waw.pl/">Bazyliszek</a> w Warszawie organizowanym przez <a href="https://klub.ava.waw.pl/">Stowarzyszenie Avangarda</a> miałem okazję być częścią panelu ""Dlaczego solarpunk jest trudny? Jak przełknąć gorzką pigułkę katastrofy klimatycznej i wciąż wyobrażać sobie lepsze jutro?".</p>
<p>Nagrania z niego możecie posłuchuchać w audycji Asi Kaniewskiej w <a href="https://radiokapital.pl/shows/dancing-in-dystopia/panel-dyskusyjny-dlaczego-solarpunk-jest-trudny/">Radiu Kapitał</a>, na <a href="https://tube.tchncs.de/w/rGpoR13bYwAGGb7voj3JCQ">PeerTube Tchncs</a> oraz <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78QUn4vQ4jM">YouTube</a>.</p>

Jednym z gatunków próbujących odpowiedzieć na to pytanie jest Solarpunk - jednak mimo ponad dekady istnienia, zdobył on bardzo małą popularność. Dlaczego tak ciężko napisać przystępne opowiadanie o klimacie nie popadając w fatalizm?</p>

<p>W niedzielę ósmego czerwca tego roku miałem okazję wziąć udział w organizowanych przez <a href="https://www.wielozmysly.org/">Fundację Dostępnej Kultury Wizualnej – Wielozmysły</a> warsztatach "Opowiadanie Światów - Edycja II":</p>
<blockquote>
<p>Opowiadanie światów integruje sztukę, naukę i aktywizm. Proponujemy szerokie myślenie o splecionych ze sobą kryzysach ekologicznych, których nie da się analizować w oderwaniu od nierówności ekonomicznych, migracji, monopolizacji technologii, systemowej przemocy wobec nieludzkich zwierząt i wielu innych aspektów. Jednocześnie poszukujemy historii, działań i myśli, które mogą nieść nadzieję. Podczas warsztatów zastanowimy się, jak edukacja kulturalna i sztuka mogą wesprzeć sprzyjające środowisku zmiany i ukazywać alternatywne formy bycia w świecie.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Oprócz mnie warsztaty prowadzili także Iwo Konfeder, Daniel Petryczkiewicz, Magdalena Salik, Marta Bogdańska oraz Alicja Borkowska!</p>
<p>Ja sam - jak zwykle - opowiadałem o Solarpunku, szczególnie w kontekście potrzeby wyobrażania realistycznych i komunikowalnych wizji przyszłości zamiast samego wyrażania sprzeciwu do zastanego świata. <p>Continuing research into the topic of game design from my <a href="/notes-towards-a-solarpunk-game-design-overview">previous overview post</a> I was a positively surprised to find a <a href="https://itch.io/jam/build-a-better-world-ttrpg-jam">Build a Better World TTRPG Jam</a>:</p>
<blockquote>
<p>“We live in capitalism,” said Le Guin, “Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.” It’s up to us, as games makers, to help people envision alternatives to how we live now, how we can build a better world.</p>
<p>TTRPGs are a fantastic way to build community and bring solace in harrowing times. Many of us, all over the world, are going through difficult and anxious days. With the community at The Lost Bay server we’ve decided to host this jam as a space for the indie TTRPG scene to come together and imagine a better future.</p>
</blockquote>
<p>Not being able to fully participate by creating a game, I decided to host a workshop titled "Solarpunk: better futures among the changing climate - and how to design them". <p>Imagining a better future in the face of climate change is hard whether you use words - or images, as I have <a href="/solarpunk-lenses-and-foundations">written extensively</a> before. With no proper <em>alphabet</em>, let alone a <em>dictionary</em>, conveying the meanings such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Degrowth">degrowth</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharing_economy">sharing economy</a> requires a lot of careful, intentional work.</p>
<p>In the recent years, with the advent of generative AI we could see more and more articles on Solarpunk - or virtually anything - being illustrated by such mindless AI creations, <a href="https://media.ccc.de/v/38c3-resource-consumption-of-ai-degrow-or-die">wasting resources</a> and stealing artstyles, while conveying nothing but vibes. Flooded by the sleek "trees on buildings" aesthetic we slowly lose any idea of what the better climate future ideas <em>can actually be</em>.</p>
<p>That's why together with almost a dozen artists, on the April 29th 2025 we launched the <a href="https://storyseedlibrary.org/">Story Seed Library</a> - a new platform with intentional, human-made Solarpunk art licensed under a variety of <a href="https://creativecommons.org/">Creative Commons</a> licenses.</p>
