Religion really has not come into play in my city council race on a conscious level but leave it some of my competitors to work God or their inflated egos into their literature/ads.  What is that white glow around Manuel Lantigua?  Is he an Alien? This picture was submitted to the Campaign Finance Board and accepted despite their ban on pins/flags and other props that would be used to sway voters.  This picture was mailed out to 54,000 registered democrats in my district and posted on the Voter Guide website. I complained to the Campaign Finance Board: I received the CFB voter guide in the mail and was shocked to see that one of my opponents has a “halo” around his image… I believe that Mr. Lantigua is purposely using a “halo” around his image because he is running in a district with a significant Spanish immigrant population that has a strong Catholic tradition.  Many Latinos who are very religious and go to church regularly are deeply influenced by Catholic iconography.  The use of a “halo” or “aureole” around the image of a city council candidate is implying on a conscious and even more frightening unconscious level that Mr. Lantigua is holy, sacred, or possessing special religious powers to voters.  The use of such religious iconography is also an insult to atheist such as myself. I would like to request at minimum that Manuel Lantigua’s picture be removed from the CFB Internet Voter Guide.  All Voter Guides that have not been mailed should be reprinted with redacted pictures although I believe that irreparable damage has been done by this significant violation of CFB rules that were not enforced against a candidate seeking to take advantage of the voter guide process.  Voters who did receive such publicly financed mailings should be mailed a disclaimer that the Catholic church is not endorsing Mr. Lantigua.  Serious breach of our Constitutional principles of the separation of church and state have occurred here. His picture is HUGE!  He’s in profile telling the consumer, “I’m so important and big, you don’t really need to see my face directly, you must recognize me!”     He’s facing the light to the right of his picture– aliens/UFO’s?  Or is he facing some divine light that guides his majestic decisions on the city council?  It could be an attempt to create a “Ghandi photograph” where you put a politician surrounded by thousands of people as Presidential candidates love to do.  This picture implies that Jackson is speaking to thousands of people to the right of him. Jackson favors a resolution to close schools for 2 Muslim holidays that I’m opposed to.  We should be extending the school year rather than shortening it.  All that talk about improving education through the Campaign for Fiscal Equity that Jackson takes credit for goes out the window when religious holidays come up. My pictures?  Well, if voters remember anything they’ll remember the cute Mariachi custom and the silly mustache I wore on my TV ads.  I tend to poke fun at myself and don’t think I’m so self important that I can’t laugh at all the process political candidates go through.  I should paraphrase Bill Rogers, I am not a member of any religious group, I am a Democrat. Below is Bill Maher’s speech at the end of his documentary, Religulous.  He makes that point that 16% of the United States polls as non-religious and that this group is larger than any minority group or special interest lobby.  Yet this 16% is really timid, almost hidden in the closet for fear of being ostracized. Bill Maher:  The plain fact is, religion must die for mankind to live. The hour is getting very late to be able to indulge having in key decisions made by religious people. By irrationalists, by those who would steer the ship of state not by a compass, but by the equivalent of reading the entrails of a chicken. George Bush prayed a lot about Iraq, but he didn’t learn a lot about it. Faith means making a virtue out of not thinking. It’s nothing to brag about. And those who preach faith, and enable and elevate it are intellectual slaveholders, keeping mankind in a bondage to fantasy and nonsense that has spawned and justified so much lunacy and destruction. Religion is dangerous because it allows human beings who don’t have all the answers to think that they do. Most people would think it’s wonderful when someone says, “I’m willing, Lord! I’ll do whatever you want me to do!” Except that since there are no gods actually talking to us, that void is filled in by people with their own corruptions and limitations and agendas. And anyone who tells you they know, they just know what happens when you die, I promise you, you don’t. How can I be so sure? Because I don’t know, and you do not possess mental powers that I do not. The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble, and that’s what man needs to be, considering that human history is just a litany of getting shit dead wrong. This is why rational people, anti-religionists, must end their timidity and come out of the closet and assert themselves. And those who consider themselves only moderately religious really need to look in the mirror and realize that the solace and comfort that religion brings you comes at a horrible price. If you belonged to a political party or a social club that was tied to as much bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, violence, and sheer ignorance as religion is, you’d resign in protest. To do otherwise is to be an enabler, a mafia wife, for the true devils of extremism that draw their legitimacy from the billions of their fellow travelers. If the world does come to an end here, or wherever, or if it limps into the future, decimated by the effects of religion-inspired nuclear terrorism, let’s remember what the real problem was. We learned how to precipitate mass death before we got past the neurological disorder of wishing for it. That’s it. Grow up or die.
