Donated eggs enabled me to carry, grow & birth my children, but it hasn’t cured my infertility. That still exists & always will.
Donor conception can be presented as THE solution, sometimes almost as though it’s just another add-on within a range of treatment options...ICSI, PGS tests, donor eggs, intralipids, embryo glue. Yes, it can provide a better chance to conceive & bring home a longed-for baby, but it is in no way an ‘easy’ option & it will never ‘cure’ infertility.
To be presented as such is far too simplistic & doesn’t recognise the complexity of emotions involved, not only in making the decision but continuing through treatment, pregnancy & parenting too.
We can’t assume that all of the pain & grief surrounding infertility will simply disappear the moment we see a positive test or when a baby is in our arms. What needs to be recognised is the emotional processing that is continually taking place, including triggers that can unexpectedly resurface lingering grief. It’s so important to work through & process these so that we can be the best support to our kids.
I’m incredibly grateful for this option bringing me to where I am today. In so many ways it has healed my heart, whilst I’ve grieved the loss of my genetics & accepted that I will never share DNA with my children. But it hasn’t always been easy & occasionally there are still odd moments of grief, only now they are interspersed with more JOY than I ever thought was possible 🥰
I want anyone on this path feeling this to know that your emotions are valid. Don’t put pressure on yourself or feel guilty if you have wobbles, grief or uncertainty - it’s part of the process & you’re not alone. It was the top story on BBC News this morning, so many of you will have seen it too, & I imagine it wasn’t an easy to read for you either. I know someone who used this clinic, & looking back through my 2015 emails, I realised I’d been in touch with one of the clinic staff in this story. I had this clinic on our shortlist before we chose a different path & went with a clinic in Prague.
I read my own words from my enquiries back to myself & none of them would have caught what these families are only now uncovering. No-one could have known what questions to ask to prevent this. My questions were practical, asked from a vulnerable, desperate place after so much heartache. So I trusted, as we all do, because that’s what you have no choice but to do in professional environments selling you hope alongside your care.
This is why stories like this cut so deep for this community. When something this ‘extreme’ surfaces, it becomes the sensationalised picture people hold of donor conception, rather than the ordinary reality most families experience. That gap between the sensational & the ordinary is where unnecessary shame gets added.
There’s real tension between profit & ethics in this industry, especially around family limits & donor care. I wish this wasn’t a profit making industry, I really do. But there are also clinics & professionals doing this properly, with integrity, every day. Both are true at once.
So if this has unsettled you, you’re not alone. Ask more questions than I knew to, about family limits, donor screening, & what happens to your information. Clinics, professionals & donor coordinators hold responsibility for donors, recipients & the families they help create. You’re allowed to want hope & demand accountability from those offering it.

The findings, which we presented at ESHRE 2026, point to a clear, specific gap between the medical care recipients receive and the psychosocial support they actually need.
97.5% of respondents told us they were carrying at least one worry about donor conception. And 32% said the support they received from their clinic wasn’t adequate for their needs.
Not because the medical care was poor, but because a single session of implications counselling, where it exists at all, can’t hold the full weight of what this journey asks of people, such as disclosure, identity, donor siblings, and years of parenting questions still to come.
This isn’t a criticism of clinical teams, it’s a gap in the system around them, one that peer-led and psychosocial support is already filling, often without clinics knowing it’s happening.
We’re hosting a free webinar for fertility professionals and clinic teams to walk through what recipients told us and what it means for practice, joined by Julianne Boutaleb, perinatal psychologist @parenthoodinmind working with recipients outside the clinical setting.
We’ll also talk through how @paths_to_parenthub can work as part of an integrated care pathway, complementary to clinical care, not separate from it.
