Humphrey argues that sentience enhances life quality by creating a cognitive workspace for narrative self-awareness, based on empirical research and philosophical insights. The discussion extends to the phenomenon of blindsight, distinguishing between sensation and perception, underscoring consciousness's role in natural selection. The Consciousness of Neuroscience Àlex Gómez-Marín eNeuro 10:1-5 doi: 10.1523/ENEURO.0434-23.2023 Abstract A critique of the current state of consciousness research, emphasizing the importance of moving beyond empirical data to include philosophical and theoretical frameworks. Gómez-Marín advocates for adversarial collaborations as a means to test and refine theories, challenging the scientific community to rethink its methodologies and biases. What Happens With the Mind When the Brain Dies? Àlex Gómez-Marín Organisms: Journal of Biological Sciences, 6: 51-53 doi: 10.13133/2532-5876/17861 Abstract A neuroscientist reflects on his near-death experience to ponder the nature of the human mind and the survival of consciousness after death. Ancient traditions, manifold personal experiences, nuanced philosophical views, and recent scientific evidence, all point to the brain as a filter of consciousness rather than its fanciful producer. No doubt, good-old-fashioned materialists ---nowadays rebranded as physicalists, crypto-dualists, or illusionists wearing virtual reality goggles--- insist that minds are "nothing but" what brains do. Nevertheless, a trans-materialist science can expand the scope and depth of the answers that really matter not only to science but also to human flourishing. Materialists' Best Guess? A Review of Anil Seth's "Being You" Àlex Gómez-Marín Journal of Consciousness Studies 29: 201-207 Abstract A review of Anil Seth's book "Being You: A New Science of Consciousness," which explores the scientific study of consciousness. Gomez-Marin appreciates Seth's engaging narrative and the book's aim to demystify consciousness by proposing that our brains generate a controlled hallucination of reality. However, he challenges Seth's materialistic approach, arguing it oversimplifies the complexity of consciousness. The review advocates for a broader exploration beyond physicalist constraints, emphasizing the importance of addressing foundational questions about the nature of conscious experience. Metaphors Neuroscientists Live By Àlex Gómez-Marín Frontiers in Computer Science, 4:890531 doi: 10.3389/fcomp.2022.890531 Abstract Four decades ago, linguists and philosophers George Lakoff and Mark Johnson published an influential book on the nature of metaphors. In Metaphors We Live By they argued that abstract thought is mostly metaphorical , that metaphors are fundamentally conceptual , and that metaphorical thought is ubiquitous, unavoidable, largely unconscious, and grounded in everyday life. Despite the popular acclaim of the book and its impact across academic disciplines, their claims met resistance as they challenged objectivist views of meaning and language. Promisomics and the Short-Circuiting of Mind Àlex Gómez-Marín eNeuro, 8:1-5 doi: 10.1523/ENEURO.0521-20.2021 Abstract Grand neuroscience projects, such as connectomics, have a recurrent tendency to overpromise and underdeliver. Here I critically assess what is done in contrast with what is claimed about such endeavors, especially when the results are "horizontal" and the conclusions "vertical", namely, when maps of one level are conflated with mappings between levels . I argue that to suggest that connectomics will give us the mind of a mouse, a human or even a fly is conceptually flawed. Even if we, neuroscientists, do not take our metaphors literally, we should take them seriously. The Luminous Shadow of Materialism Àlex Gómez-Marín Atas do Congresso Internacional Comunicação e Luz, . Braga: CECS Abstract The so often criticized shadow of materialism, when reflected upon with an integral, perspective, reveals itself as a hidden potential seeking emergence. However, such a condition for human progress can be grasped provided we are willing to lessen the tension between the two-fold excess of pride and complaint so characteristic of the illusory attachments of enlightenment and romanticism. An appreciation of the power dormant in the dark pool of light of materialism becomes particularly relevant in the context of the current international year of light. Academic studies on claimed past-life memories: A scoping review Lucam J. Moraes, Gabrielle S. Barbosaa, João Pedro G.B. Castroa, Jim B. Tucker, Alexander Moreira-Almeida EXPLORE, 18, June 2021 doi: 10.1016/j.explore.2021.05.006 Abstract This study reviews observational studies regarding alleged past-life memories published as scientific articles, and points out their bibliometric and methodological characteristics. Scientific databases were screened . The 78 included studies were classified by their methodological and bibliometric characteristics. The peak of publications occurred from 1990 to 2010 , and Asia was the most investigated territory ; most of investigations were related to children and case report was the predominant study design . Interview was the predominant methodological approach , followed by documental analysis . Claimed past-life memories , unusual behaviors and birthmarks/defects were the most investigated variables. Investigations of past-life memories should be encouraged around all cultures, and future studies should consider previous methodological features and try to overcome their limitations. Methodological guidelines to investigate altered states of consciousness and anomalous experiences Alexander Moreira-Almeida International Review of Psychiatry, Volume 29, Number 3, 2017, 283--292 doi: 10.1080/09540261.2017.1285555 Abstract Anomalous experiences and altered states of consciousness have been described in all societies of all ages. Even so, scientists have long neglected the studies on this theme. To study AE and ASC is not necessary to share the beliefs we explore, they can be investigated as subjective experiences and correlated with other data, like any other human experience. This article presents some methodological guidelines to investigate these experiences, among them: to avoid dogmatic prejudice and to 'pathologize' the unusual; the value of a theory and a comprehensive literature review; to utilize a variety of criteria for pathology and normality; the investigation of clinical and non-clinical populations; development of new appropriate research instruments; to be careful to choose the wording to describe the AE; to distinguished the lived experience from its interpretations; to take into account the role of culture; to evaluate the validity and reliability of reports and, last but not least, creativity and diversity in choosing methods. The mind-brain problem in psychiatry: why theoretical pluralism is better than theoretical monism Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Saulo de Freitas Araujo Dialogues in Philosophy, Mental and Neuro Sciences, 10:23-25, June 2017 Abstract The mind-brain problem is a persistent challenge in philosophy and science, having marked implications for psychiatry. In this paper, we claim that physicalism, a kind of theoretical monism, is usually taken by many psychiatrists as the only possible solution to the MBP, and argue that this may have negative consequences for the field. Not only does it restrict the psychiatric training, thereby preventing professionals from considering and reflecting upon different perspectives on the MBP, but it also leads clinical psychiatrists to ignore alternatives in their research agendas and clinical care. We suggest, therefore, that, as long as the MBP remains open and disputed by divergent views, theoretical monism should give place to theoretical pluralism in psychiatry. Does the brain produce the mind? A survey of psychiatrists' opinions Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Saulo de Freitas Araujo Archives of Clinical Psychiatry , 42:74-5, July 2015 doi: 10.1590/0101-60830000000051 Abstract Background: Psychiatrists' views on the mind-brain relationship have marked clinical and research implications, but there is a lack of studies on this topic. Objectives To evaluate psychiatrists' opinions on the MBR, and whether they are amenable to change or not. Methods: We conducted a survey of psychiatrists' views on the MBR just before and after a debate on the MBR at the Brazilian Congress of Psychiatry in 2014. Results: Initially, from more than 600 participants, 53% endorsed the view that "the mind is a product of brain activity", while 47% disagreed. Moreover, 72% contested the view that "the universe is composed only of matter". After the debate, 30% changed from a materialist to a non-materialist view of mind, while 17% changed in the opposite way. Discussion: Psychiatrists are interested in debates on the MBR, do not hold a monolithic view on the subject and their positions are open to reflection and change, suggesting the need for more in-depth studies and rigorous but open-minded debates on the subject. Clinical implications of spirituality to mental health: Review of evidence and practical guidelines Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Harold Koenig, Giancarlo Lucchetti Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria, 36:176-82, April 2014 doi: 10.1590/1516-4446-2013-1255 Abstract Objective: Despite empirical evidence of a relationship between religiosity/spirituality and mental health and recommendations by professional associations that these research findings be integrated into clinical practice, application of this knowledge in the clinic remains a challenge. This paper reviews the current state of the evidence and provides evidence-based guidelines for spiritual assessment and for integration of R/S into mental health treatment. Methods: PubMed searches of relevant terms yielded 1,109 papers. We selected empirical studies and reviews that addressed assessment of R/S in clinical practice. Results: The most widely acknowledged and agreed-upon application of R/S to clinical practice is the need to take a spiritual history , which may improve patient compliance, satisfaction with care, and health outcomes. We found 25 instruments for SH collection, several of which were validated and of good clinical utility. Conclusions: This paper provides practical guidelines for spiritual assessment and integration thereof into mental health treatment, as well as suggestions for future research on the topic. William James and psychical research: Towards a radical science of mind Alexandre Sech Junior, Saulo de Freitas Araujo, Alexander Moreira-Almeida History of Psychiatry, 24:62-78, March 2013 doi: 10.1177/0957154X12450138 Abstract Traditional textbooks on the history of psychiatry and psychology fail to recognize William James's investigations on psychic phenomena as a legitimate effort to understand the human mind. The purpose of this paper is to offer evidence of his views regarding the exploration of those phenomena as well as the radical, yet alternative, solutions that James advanced to overcome theoretical and methodological hindrances. Through an analysis of his writings, it is argued that his psychological and philosophical works converge in psychical research revealing the outline of a science of mind capable of encompassing psychic phenomena as part of human experience and, therefore, subject to scientific scrutiny. Neuroimaging during Trance State: A Contribution to the Study of Dissociation Julio F P, Alexander Moreira-Almeida, Leonardo Caixeta, Andrew Newberg, Frederico Camelo Leão PLoS ONE, 7:e49360, November 2012 doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0049360 Abstract Despite increasing interest in pathological and non-pathological dissociation, few researchers have focused on the spiritual experiences involving dissociative states such as mediumship, in which an individual claims to be in communication with, or under the control of, the mind of a deceased person. Our preliminary study investigated psychography -- in which allegedly ''the spirit writes through the medium's hand'' -- for potential associations with specific alterations in cerebral activity. We examined ten healthy psychographers -- five less expert mediums and five with substantial experience, ranging from 15 to 47 years of automatic writing and 2 to 18 psychographies per month -- using single photon emission computed tomography to scan activity as subjects were writing, in both dissociative trance and non-trance states. The complexity of the original written content they produced was analyzed for each individual and for the sample as a whole. The experienced psychographers showed lower levels of activity in the left culmen, lefthippocampus, left inferior occipital gyrus, left anterior cingulate, right superior temporal gyrus and right precentral gyrus during psychography compared to their normal writing. The average complexity scores for psychographed content were higher than those for control writing, for both the whole sample and for experienced mediums. The fact that subjects produced complex content in a trance dissociative state suggests they were not merely relaxed, and relaxation seems an unlikely explanation for the underactivation of brain areas specifically related to the cognitive processing being carried out. This finding deserves further investigation both in terms of replication and explanatory hypotheses. Consciousness, Collective Consciousness, Enlightenment, and Collective Enlightenment Allan Combs Spanda Journal, VII, 1 / 2017 Abstract The term Collective Enlightenment presents itself ripe with possibilities, but on closer examination it is hard to pin them down. An open search on Google, for example, brings up almost nothing. Indeed, the word "enlightenment" is itself without clear definition. In truth it has no direct counterpart in traditional spiritual texts, and is a transplant from the phrase "European Enlightenment," referring to the Age of Reason. If the phrase Collective Enlightenment is taken in a societal sense it becomes a sociological term that has little in common with spiritual notions. The present essay, however, sticks to the modern use of "enlightenment" as pointing to spiritual ideas such as realization, awakening, or illumination. It is in these ways that it often replaces traditional terms such as samadhi, nirvana, and moksha in Western translations of traditional Eastern texts. Considering these as experiential states, we come to understand collective enlightenment as a shared or intersubjective experience in which individuality becomes phenomenologically second to a primary intersubjective reality that absorbs the ego into identity with the combined subjectivities of other living beings in a larger experience of unification. Though this form of experience, which we might label illuminated intersubjectivity or Collective Enlightenment, has received little attention in the literatures of religion and philosophy, it has often appeared implicitly in art and poetry, and has been described in philosophical works of science fiction. The Holographic Theory of Reality Allan Combs and Stanley Krippner What is Reality? The New Map of Cosmos, Consciousness, and Existence, pp 120-124, SelectBooks, 2016 Abstract If we look deeply at the implications of many holographic and informational theories of the cosmos, an extraordinary prospect presents itself. This is the possibility of the existence of entire worlds that are not simply distant in space, but which lie entirely outside the "material" universe of physical events as we know them, though still resting in the same holographic informational plenum as ordinary reality. Informational fields of the holographic variety are of special interest in this regard because they store dense quantities of information, and because entire nonoverlapping fields of information can be activated in them by modulating the wavelength of an eliciting signal such as a coherent beam of light. Is there Awareness Outside Attention? A Psychological Perspective Allan Combs, Stanley Krippner, and Eugene Taylor Journal of Consciousness Studies, 17, 2010 Abstract This paper approaches the question of awareness outside of attention through a broader psychological examination of human consciousness. Questions regarding the boundaries of conscious awareness, as well as the possibility of 'subconscious' or 'unconscious' mental processes, were widely discussed 100 years and more ago when they played a central role in the thinking of turn-of-the-century theorists such as William James, F.W.H. Myers, Jean-Martin Charcot, and Pierre Janet, all of whom were interested in dissociative phenomena suggestive of consciousness, or awareness, beyond the margins of attention. Such phenomena included hypnosis, hysteria, trance states, and motor automatisms, and for many scholars also sleep related conditions such as dreaming and hypnogogic states. Dreaming as a Function of Chaos-Like Stochastic Processes in the Self-Organizing Brain David Kahn, Allan Combs, Stanley Krippner Nonlinear Dynamics, Psychology, and Life Sciences, 6, 311-322, 2002 Abstract This paper argues that dream experiences owe both their structure and meaning to stochastic self-organizing properties of the brain during sleep. Several lines of evidence support the notion that the dreaming brain can be understood as a process system that exhibits chaos-like stochastic properties that are highly sensitive to internal influences. This sensitivity is due, first, to the fact that the dreaming brain gates out external input, thus operating without the stabilizing influences of waking feedback. Second, the pre-frontal cortex in both REM and non-REM sleep is only minimally activated, thus the brain operates with weakened volition, reduced logic, and diminished self-reflection. Third, there is a reduction of neuromodulatory inhibition during sleep, which is most pronounced during REM sleep, allowing the brain to respond to minute internal stimulation. Finally, the REM sleeping brain is subject to powerful intermittent cholinergic PGO activity that may provide vigorous stimulation for complex dream activity. Taken in overview, this conception of dreaming offers a common meeting ground for brain-based studies of dreaming and psychological dream theory. Consciousness as a Self-Organizing Process: An Ecological Perspective Allan Combs and Sally Goerner Biosystems, Vol 46, 1--2, pp 123-127, 1998 doi: 10.1016/S0303-264700089-0 Abstract The evolution of consciousness is seen in the context of energy driven evolution in general, where energy and information are understood as two sides of the same coin. From this perspective consciousness is viewed as an ecological system in which streams of cognitive, perceptual, and emotional information form a rich complex of interactions, analogous to the interactive metabolism of a living cell. The result is an organic, self-generating, or autopoietic, system, continuously in the act of creating itself. Evidence suggests that this process is chaotic, or at least chaotic-like, and capable of assuming a number of distinct states best understood as chaotic attractors. Jung and the Evolution of Consciousness Allan Combs and Stanley Krippner Psychological Perspectives, 33, 60-76, 1996 Abstract Carl Jung was both a mystic and a scientist. It is as if he had two minds, a soft spiritual one and a hard rational one. While he honored the soft mind and refused to abandon its truths to cold analysis, he also took considerable pride in being a scientist who reported his findings as objectively as he could. Perhaps the greatest sadness of his life was the failure of the orthodox scientific community to embrace his work. Beyond the 'Theory of Everything' Paradigm: Synergetic Patterns and the Order of the Natural World Brian D Josephson Is Relational Physics the Way Ahead? Brian D Josephson and Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar The Physics of Mind and Thought Brian D Josephson Activitas Nervosa Superior 61, pages 86--90 DOI: 10.1007/s41470-019-00049-w String Theory, Universal Mind, and the Paranormal Brian D Josephson arXiv:physics 2003 DOI: 10.48550/arXiv.physics/0312012 How Observers Create Reality Brian D Josephson Participatory Observers as the Basis of Physical Reality Brian D Josephson and Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar Feeling the Future: A Meta-analysis of 90 Experiments on the Anomalous Anticipation of Random Future Events Daryl Bem, Patrizio Tressoldi, Thomas Rabeyron, Michael Duggan Abstract In 2011, the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published a report of nine experiments purporting to demonstrate that an individual's cognitive and affective responses can be influenced by randomly selected stimulus events that do not occur until after his or her responses have already been made and recorded, a generalized variant of the phenomenon traditionally denoted by the term precognition . To encourage replications, all materials needed to conduct them were made available on request. We here report a meta-analysis of 90 experiments from 33 laboratories in 14 countries which yielded an overall effect greater than 6 sigma, z = 6.40, p = 1.2 × 10-10 with an effect size of 0.09. A Bayesian analysis yielded a Bayes Factor of 1.4 × 109, greatly exceeding the criterion value of 100 for "decisive evidence" in support of the experimental hypothesis . The number of potentially unretrieved experiments required to reduce the overall effect size to a trivial value is 547. Several tests demonstrate that the database is not significantly compromised by publication bias, selection bias, or by "p-hacking," the selective suppression of findings or statistical analyses that failed to yield statistical significance. An analysis of p--curve, the distribution of significant p values estimates the true effect size of the database to be 0.20, virtually identical to the effect size of Bem's original studies . We discuss the controversial status of precognition and other anomalous effects collectively known as psi. Feeling the Future: Experimental Evidence for Anomalous Retroactive Influences on Cognition and Affect Daryl Bem Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 100, 407-425, 2011 doi: 10.1037/a0021524 Abstract The term psi denotes anomalous processes of information or energy transfer that are currently unexplained in terms of known physical or biological mechanisms. Two variants of psi are precognition and premonition of a future event that could not otherwise be anticipated through any known inferential process. Precognition and premonition are themselves special cases of a more general phenomenon: the anomalous retroactive influence of some future event on an individual's current responses, whether those responses are conscious or nonconscious, cognitive or affective. This article reports 9 experiments, involving more than 1,000 participants, that test for retroactive influence by "time- reversing" well-established psychological effects so that the individual's responses are obtained before the putatively causal stimulus events occur. Data are presented for 4 time-reversed effects: precognitive approach to erotic stimuli and precognitive avoidance of negative stimuli; retroactive priming; retroactive habituation; and retroactive facilitation of recall. All but one of the experiments yielded statistically significant results; and, across all 9 experiments, Stouffer's z = 6.66, p = 1.34 × 10 -11 with a mean effect size of 0.22. The individual-difference variable of stimulus seeking, a component of extraversion, was significantly correlated with psi performance in 5 of the experiments, with participants who scored above the midpoint on a scale of stimulus seeking achieving a mean effect size of 0.43. Skepticism about psi, issues of replication, and theories of psi are also discussed. Must Psychologists Change the Way They Analyze Their Data? A Response to Wagenmakers, Wetzels, Borsboom, & Van der Maas Daryl Bem, Jessica Utts and Wesley O Johnson Abstract We agree with Wagenmakers, Wetzels, Borsboom, & van der Maas that there are advantages to analyzing data with Bayesian statistical procedures, but we argue that they have incorrectly characterized several features of Bem's psi experiments and have selected an unrealistic Bayesian prior distribution for their analysis, leading them to seriously underestimate the experimental support in favor of the psi hypothesis. We provide an extended Bayesian analysis that displays the effects of different prior distributions on the Bayes factors and conclude that the evidence strongly favors the psi hypothesis over the null. More generally, we believe that psychology would be well served by training future generations of psychologists in the skills necessary to understand Bayesian analyses well enough to perform them on their own data. Updating the Ganzfeld Database: A Victim of Its Own Success? Daryl Bem, John Palmer, Richard S Broughton The Journal of Parapsychology, 65, 207--218, 2001 Abstract The existence of psi---anomalous processes of information transfer such as telepathy or clairvoyance---continues to be controversial. Earlier meta-analyses of studies using the so-called ganzfeld procedure appeared to provide replicable evidence for psi , but a follow-up meta-analysis of 30 more recent ganzfeld studies did not . When 10 new studies published after the Milton-Wiseman cutoff date are added to their database, the overall ganzfeld effect again becomes significant, but the mean effect size is still smaller than those from the original studies. Ratings of all 40 studies by 3 independent raters reveal that the effect size achieved by a replication is significantly correlated with the degree to which it adhered to the standard ganzfeld protocol. Standard replications yield significant effect sizes comparable to those obtained in the past. Does Psi Exist? Replicable Evidence for an Anomalous Process of Information Transfer. Daryl Bem and Charles Honorton Psychological Bulletin, 115, 4--18, 1994 doi: 10.1037/0033-2909.115.1.4 Abstract Most academic psychologists do not yet accept the existence of psi, anomalous processes of information or energy transfer that are currently unexplained in terms of known physical or biological mechanisms. We believe that the replication rates and effect sizes achieved by one particular experimental method, the ganzfeld procedure, are now sufficient to warrant bringing this body of data to the attention of the wider psychological community. Competing meta-analyses of the ganzfeld database are reviewed, 1 by R. Hyman , a skeptical critic of psi research, and the other by C. Honorton , a parapsychologist and major contributor to the ganzfeld database. Next the results of 11 new ganzfeld studies that comply with guidelines jointly authored by R. Hyman and C. Honorton are summarized. Finally, issues of replication and theoretical explanation are discussed. In 2014, however, the University of Washington Bothell campus formally launched a transdisciplinary and integral Minor in Consciousness, the first of its kind at a public research institution in North America. A four-year study explored the intellectual and personal effects of studying consciousness from this perspective for undergraduate students who enrolled in the first course in the Minor's sequence during Autumn Quarter 2012, 2013, 2014, or 2015. Results indicated that students' beliefs about consciousness and reality changed significantly over a ten-week period, becoming markedly less materialistic and more open to information that they had previously eschewed. By the end of each year's course students reported feeling increased optimism, hope, and a desire to learn more, and a corresponding decrease in feelings of depression, anxiety, and nihilism. Introducing the study of consciousness within the context of scientific revolutions and paradigm shifts proved particularly efficacious and may be a useful strategy for those who are interested in teaching or learning about consciousness in less than supportive academic environments. Fostering Spiritual Intelligence: Undergraduates' Growth in a Course About Consciousness William N Green and Kathleen D Noble Advanced Development Journal, 2013 doi: Abstract Despite a growing interest among college and university students in exploring questions about spirituality through higher education, few are provided with opportunities to do so. An integral approach to the study of consciousness addresses this gap by examining theories of consciousness and spirituality from diverse epistemological perspectives, including Western science and non-Western wisdom traditions. This study explored the intellectual and personal effects of this approach for undergraduate students who were enrolled in an Honors course about consciousness at the University of Washington during Winter Quarter 2008. Results indicated that students became more open to diverse ideas about consciousness, more self-aware, and more committed to meditation and self-reflection. Implications for the growing discourse about spirituality in higher education and the development of spiritual intelligence are discussed. In this article, I examine multiple lines of empirical evidence showing that this ideology, while partially true, is woefully incomplete and, therefore, obsolete. This evidence indicates that we humans can- not be reduced to powerless, biophysical machines since the psyche greatly influences the activity of the brain and the body, and can oper- ate telosomatically. Based on this evidence, I introduce the Theory of Psychelementarity and present a few predictions. This theory proposes that the psyche plays a role as primordial as that of matter, energy, and space-time. Another central premise of this theory is that the psyche cannot be reduced to physical processes. The TOP accounts for a number of well-studied psychophysical phenomena, which are reinterpreted in light of a post-materialist perspective. This theory also accounts for anomalous phenomena that are currently rejected by materialists. Near-death experiences in cardiac arrest: implications for the concept of non-local mind NataLie Trent-von Haesler, Mario Beauregard Mind-Brain Series; Archives of Clinical Psychiatry, 40, 2013 doi: /10.1590/S0101-60832013000500005 Abstract Background: Near-death experiences are vivid, realistic, and often deeply life-changing experiences occurring to people who have been physiologically or psychologically close to death. NDE sometimes occur during cardiac arrest, in the absence of recordable brain activity. Objective: To review prospective studies of cardiac arrest-induced NDE and examine the implications of these studies for the concept of non-local mind. Method: PubMed was the main database used for this review. Key search terms included "cardiac arrest", "near-death experiences", "physiology of near-death experience", and "veridical out-of-body- -experiences". Results: Several prospective studies show an average incidence of cardiac arrest-induced NDE of 10%-20%, irrespective of sociodemographic status, sex, religion, or any consistent medical, physiological, or pharmacological measures. NDErs are more likely than non-NDErs to have positive life changes lasting many years following the experience. Discussion: Physicalist theories of the mind cannot explain how NDErs can experience -- while their hearts are stopped and brain activity is seemingly absent -- vivid and complex thoughts, and acquire veridical information about objects or events remote from their bodies. NDE in cardiac arrest suggest that mind is non-local, i.e. it is not generated by the brain, and it is not confined to the brain and the body Mind does really matter: Evidence from neuroimaging studies of emotional self-regulation, psychotherapy, and placebo effect Mario Beauregard Progress in Neurobiology, 81 218--236 doi: /10.1016/j.pneurobio.2007.01.005 Abstract This article reviews neuroimaging studies of conscious and voluntary regulation of various emotional states . The results of these studies show that metacognition and cognitive recontextualization selectively alters the way the brain processes and reacts to emotional stimuli. Neuroimaging studies of the effect of psychotherapy in patients suffering from diverse forms of psychopathology are also examined. The results of these studies indicate that the mental functions and processes involved in diverse forms of psychotherapy exert a significant influence on brain activity. Neuroimaging investigations of the placebo effect in healthy individuals and patients with Parkinson's disease or unipolar major depressive disorder are also reviewed. The results of these investigations demonstrate that beliefs and expectations can markedly modulate neurophysiological and neurochemical activity in brain regions involved in perception, movement, pain, and various aspects of emotion processing. Collectively, the findings of the neuroimaging studies reviewed here strongly support the view that the subjective nature and the intentional content of mental processes significantly influence the various levels of brain functioning and brain plasticity. Furthermore, these findings indicate that mentalistic variables have to be seriously taken into account to reach a correct understanding of the neural bases of behavior in humans. An attempt is made to interpret the results of these neuroimaging studies with a new theoretical framework called the Psychoneural Translation Hypothesis. Brain activity in near-death experiencers during a meditative state Mario Beauregard, Jérôme Courtemanche, Vincent Paquette Resuscitation, Volume 80, Issue 9, Sept 2009, 1006--1010 doi: 10.1016/j.resuscitation.2009.05.006 Abstract Aim: To measure brain activity in near-death experiencers during a meditative state. Methods: In two separate experiments, brain activity was measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography during a Meditation condition and a Control condition. In the Meditation condition, participants were asked to mentally visualize and emotionally connect with the "being of light" allegedly encountered during their "near-death experience". In the Control condition, participants were instructed to mentally visualize the light emitted by a lamp. Results: In the fMRI experiment, significant loci of activation were found during the Meditation condition in the right brainstem, right lateral orbitofrontal cortex, right medial prefrontal cortex, right superior parietal lobule, left superior occipital gyrus, left anterior temporal pole, left inferior temporal gyrus, left anterior insula, left parahippocampal gyrus and left substantia nigra. In the EEG experiment, electrode sites showed greater theta power in the Meditation condition relative to the Control condition at FP1, F7, F3, T5, P3, O1, FP2, F4, F8, P4, Fz, Cz and Pz. In addition, higher alpha power was detected at FP1, F7, T3 and FP2, whereas higher gamma power was found at FP2, F7, T4 and T5. Conclusions: The results indicate that the meditative state was associated with marked hemodynamic and neuroelectric changes in brain regions known to be involved either in positive emotions, visual mental imagery, attention or spiritual experiences. EEG activity in Carmelite nuns during a mystical experience Mario Beauregard, Vincent Paquette Neuroscience Letters, 444 1--4 doi: 10.1016/j.neulet.2008.08.028 Abstract Mystical experiences relate to a fundamental dimension of human existence. These experiences, which are characterized by a sense of union with God, are commonly reported across all cultures. To date, no electroencephalography study has been conducted to identify the neuroelectrical correlates of such experiences. The main objective of this study was to measure EEG spectral power and coherence in 14 Carmelite nuns during a mystical experience. EEG activity was recorded from 19 scalp locations during a resting state, a control condition and a mystical condition. In the mystical condition compared to control condition, electrode sites showed greater theta power at F3, C3, P3, Fz, Cz and Pz, and greater gamma1 power was detected at T4 and P4. Higher delta/beta ratio, theta/alpha ratio and theta/beta ratio were found for several electrode sites. In addition, FP1--C3 pair of electrodes displayed greater coherence for theta band while F4--P4, F4--T6, F8--T6 and C4--P4 pairs of electrodes showed greater coherence for alpha band. These results indicate that mystical experiences are mediated by marked changes in EEG power and coherence. These changes implicate several cortical areas of the brain in both hemispheres.
