The Greens seem to think it isn’t.
How ironic that Zak Polanski was the only politician on this morning’s @bbclaurak programme clearly defending it.
As Trump and Israel push the world towards escalating violence and unpredictable consequences, our own leaders seem unwilling to challenge them. Priti Patel offered unqualified support. Defence Secretary @johnhealeymp repeated that we “didn’t join the attack”, but stopped short of condemning it – a managed but shaky middle line.
Polanski, by contrast, was clear: international law matters. Negotiation matters. Avoiding tit-for-tat retaliation matters.
He also raised something important. In 2017 Trump tore up the Iran nuclear agreement – the deal painstakingly negotiated under Obama and others. Now he claims to have “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear capability – apparently more than once. Words matter. So does history.
Yes, the Iranian regime is deeply problematic. But destabilising the world order comes at a cost to all of us. If we abandon international law when it’s inconvenient, we weaken the framework that keeps global conflict in check.
