We work creatively with people and place, and this project is the epitome of that.
Informed by conversations our producers had with residents about growing and access to green space, we commissioned @parkerwords two years ago to capture these stories as we began to consider the Right to Grow.
Nathan spoke to locals who use Blackpool’s allotments and community gardens as well as those who don’t.
He heard stories of joy and community, easing grief and supporting recovery, which inspired a series of poems highlighting how important these places are, and how often they're overlooked.
We knew we wanted to give these stories a platform, so when Nathan said he wanted to write a play, we commissioned him to turn these conversations into one, with poems scattered throughout. Little did he know he’d be the leading man.
Director and producer @karenmet82 came on board to help shape the script and direct the production. We tested it at our 2025 Symposium and toured it across Blackpool where each community created their own welcome.
People kept telling us: “You should take this to Edinburgh!”
So we did.
Artist @josephdoubtfire created the visuals. Graphic designer @thomisom transformed them into the programme, posters, and leaflets.
We didn’t want Edinburgh to mean leaving Blackpool behind.
So, we took a coach of residents to Edinburgh to experience the Fringe and support the play. Five Right to Grow volunteers came too – Tracey, Leon, Barry, Maggie and Karen were incredible, helping with the set up, gathering feedback, flyering and getting people to the show – with a sell out performance! We also gave out thousands of seed parcels tied to Mereside’s Field of Dreams.
Then came the review. Four stars from the British Theatre Guide.
A play written from conversations with Blackpool residents, created through our long-term relationships with artists – now worth four stars on an international stage.
Congratulations to Nathan, Karen, Joseph, Thom, our volunteers, and everyone who helped make this happen.

Work with ceramicist Laura Negus to collectively to build a temporary clay installation inspired by the orchard in its growing season. Watch the sculpture evolve as each participant adds to the work, with the process captured through time-lapse.

Transform locally felled wood into a collection of beautiful objects, with artist Bruno School, to display at The Grange's Apple Festival this October. Emma’s work explores the emotional connections we form with our clothes, where cloth gathers meaning through traces of bodies, places and time.
Drawing on the rhythms and markings of the urban and natural world, Emma works with Japanese visible repair techniques and traditional Unshin Sashiko. Stitch becomes a means of connection between people and with materials, creating opportunities for collective enquiry.
Through care, curiosity and the intimacy of stitch, damage becomes a site of beauty and meaning. Repair celebrates continued use, imperfection and ageing, honouring the stories held within cloth and the lives of garments and their wearers.
Emma’s first workshop will take place next Monday, 24th August, where she will be exploring Bostonway with a gentle walk around the estate, sharing favourite places, memories and the rhythms of everyday life.
If you’d like to attend, please bring along a treasured item of clothing. Through slow looking, photography and conversation we'll explore the stories held within our garments. We’ll close the day with an informal gathering, where we'll share garment stories and explore our connections with clothes and community.

Artist @bruno_schooling is hosting a series of FREE workshops exploring the creative possibilities of locally felled timber. Together, participants will create a collection of beautiful objects to display at The Grange's Apple Festival this October.
Bruno's practice begins by listening to the material. Rather than forcing wood into a predetermined form, these workshops invite participants to spend time with it – noticing its grain, weight, imperfections and potential. It's an exploration of wood as an artistic material, revealing how place, process and making are deeply connected.
Along the way, participants will learn different skills and techniques that they can take forward and continue using in everyday life, discovering that woodworking can be both a practical craft and a thoughtful creative practice.
The title Out of Wind comes from a traditional woodworking term. A piece of timber that's "out of wind" is perfectly flat, with no twist or warp – ready to become something new.

Working in partnership with @blackpoolcoastal_housing, the project started over a brew and conversations with residents about what they’d like to see in the space. Over a series of artist residencies, Natalie Lee, Mark Borthwick, @nikicolclough, @francesdisley, @cjgriffithsphoto, and @sarahharrisartist helped people explore new ideas.
As food became a big part of the conversation, artist @emmadenbyart worked with the community to build The People’s Pantry from recycled materials, creating a place for growing and sharing.
Alongside residents, Landscape Architect @landarch.byabi from Myerscough College developed a garden for growing food and artistic materials that was accessible to everyone – including permeable, seashell concrete by Prof Karl Williams and his team at UCLan.
Next came an artist residency to establish the space. Artist @angelica.vanasse brought permaculture knowledge to the garden, planting up the raised beds with volunteers while introducing a creative programme around abundance and exchange.
Artist @lindadevoarts, Creative Chef @gavin.lyall, Creative Gardener Kara Dyson and Ceramicist @laura.negus joined the Abundance Programme, bringing specialist knowledge - helping volunteers develop new skills, confidence, and creative solutions to barriers in the space.
This year, Creative Gardener Karen Farnworth has continued supporting the volunteers, while Sarah Harris returned to create a visual identity for the garden - including a coat of arms.
One of the nicest things has been watching our role change over the years. As the volunteers have grown in confidence, we've been able to step back, offering support when needed while they continue to shape the space themselves. They've built a polytunnel with help from the Blackpool Volunteer Centre and Atlas; they’ve expanded the growing areas, cared for the raised beds, and taken real pride in everything they've achieved.

This weekend we’ll be heading up to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and we’re SO excited to be taking Nathan Parker's The Land Beneath Our Feet onto a national stage!
Our final rehearsals went really well this week and we’re feeling ready! We have one final tech run-through at theSpaceUK on Sunday, and then it’s straight into our performances!

Join ceramicist Laura Negus in the Field of Dreams, where you will use wild clay and natural materials from the wildflower meadow to create beautiful tiles, tokens, and sculptural objects to take home.
Whether you’re a seasoned maker or have never worked with clay before, there is something for everyone. The session is free and all materials are provided (or foraged on the day).
