In a recent op-ed, MEIC's Shannon James digs into the major problems with NorthWestern Energy's final Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), a 20-year plan for providing electricity to customers.
It’s now up to the Public Service Commission (PSC) to decide if NorthWestern’s desire to build expensive new fossil fuel and nuclear power plants -- many of which would power data centers -- is good for Montanans.
➡Concerned ratepayers can tell the PSC that we need NorthWestern to do better as it plans for the future of Montana’s electric system. Speak up at an upcoming hearing at the PSC on Tuesday, July 21, and Thursday, July 23 at 6-8 pm in Helena. The PSC is accepting written comments through July 28.
While there will be two IRP hearings in Helena, did the PSC forget that they have four other districts that they represent? As you write your comments, be sure to ask for more hearings about the IRP in cities other than Helena!

NorthWestern Energy is entertaining at least a dozen data center proposals, but it's unclear how many are slated for Montana, and not every data center proposal must go through the monopoly utility.
One thing is certain: we need regulations in addition to any ban or moratorium. Bans can be lifted, but regulations can ensure that data centers come here on our terms, if at all.
