A fascinating rare cross. Martin Gibbons and Tobias W Spanner (1999) report that T. nanus is a tiny high altitude palm tree that was originally discovered by Father Delavay in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, in 1887, and was first described scientifically by Beccari in 1910. It was then rediscovered by them in 1999 and I believe they introduced it into cultivation. It is about 3 foot high at most when mature with little or no trunk visible above ground and sometimes a considerable subterranean trunk. Unfortunately it is under extreme threat in habitat from goats that tuck into the easily reached upright inflorescences and perhaps the young seedlings too. The phenotype of this cross looks very much dominated by the magnificent Prince of Palms, T. princeps, so we will just have to see how it grows and eventually what the inflorescence looks like. @thepalmgrower @thepalmcentre #trachycarpus #trachycarpusnanus #trachycarpusprinceps #palms #palmtrees" aria-hidden="true">

What I have learnt over the last few years is that there is no point in trying to grow it in the ground round here in Surrey UK, as the slugs and snails just demolish it. So I have a couple of clumps of it growing happily in hanging baskets in shade. Unlike many of our other ferns that are struggling in our multiple heat waves (36°C today) providing it gets a nice water each morning it is growing well as the plastic like leaves don’t allow much transpiration. It gets a good water each morning plus occasional grub and is in a really free draining gritty mix. It got hit really hard by the 22/23 winter but just managed to re-emerge with multiple heads which were shared out. For those that don’t know, unlike Yucca and Agave that fill pots with a real solid mass of roots these produce bright yellow roots that just fall apart when repotting. A stunningly beautiful palm tree, it has a reputation for being a little difficult under cultivation, but we’ll see what we can do. Discovered by Martin Gibbons of @thepalmcentre in 1993 it is @wikipedia ‘a species of palm endemic to Yunnan in southern central China. It grows on limestone cliffs and ridge tops in monsoonal rain forest in the Salween River valley at elevations of 1,500–1,900 metres (4,900–6,200 ft). The epithet is Latin for “prince” and alludes to “the stately bearing of this palm and the majestic way it looks down from its lofty position on the sheer cliff faces” (Gibbons 1993). The species was described in 1995 by Gibbons, Spanner & Chen.’ @thepalmgrower

Our Sarracenia love our present heatwave of 30°C upwards day after day despite living in a stainless steel washing up bowl in full sun. They are in a mix of sphagnum moss and sharp sand. All it needs to keep them happy is plenty of rainwater, distilled water or deionised water, but never tapwater. The Sarracenia bowls stay out year-round and are unbothered by the top occasionally freezing over in winter. In fact, they need a good period of winter dormancy to keep them happy. Each spring, I chop them all right back and off they go again.

‘Canna ‘Cleopatra’ is an heirloom genetic chimera rather than a traditional cultivated hybrid. It is widely considered an identical synonym to the late-1920s sport Canna ‘Yellow King Humbert’, which itself was a sport mutation of the older bronze-leaved Canna ‘Roi Humbert’. Because of its chimeric nature, cells with two distinct genotypes (some green, some bronze) grow intermixed, giving the plant its famous unpredictable, “dipped” variegation.’
