Today Martin Luther King’s birthday is celebrated with a national holiday, but his death day disappears down the memory hole. Across the country – in response to the King Holiday and Service Act passed by Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton in 1994 – people are encouraged to make the day one of service (from Latin, <em>servus</em> = slave). Etymological irony aside, such service does not include King’s commitment to protesting a decadent system of racial and economic injustice or nonviolently resisting the warfare state that is the United States. Government sponsored service is cultural neoliberalism at its finest.

The word service is a loaded word; it has become a smiley face and vogue word over the past 34 years. Its use for MLK Day is clear: individuals are encouraged to volunteer for activities such as tutoring children, painting senior centers, delivering meals to the elderly, etc., activities that are good in themselves but far less good when used to conceal an American prophet’s message. If we don’t know these stories, we don’t know our story. We don’t know where, what—we’re living in chaos right now. The world is in chaos. Chaos of violence and oppression in many different areas. How did we get here? We got here because our government, as Dr. King said in his April 4, 1967 speech, one year to the day before he died, “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.” He didn’t say the government. He accepted it as his government. That means it’s his responsibility to change the process. And he did everything he could during that final year by resisting the Vietnam War and trying to abolish poverty in the United States by the Poor People’s Campaign, which he didn’t live to lead.

It’s the greatest purveyor of terrorism in the world today. It is commonly known that John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert Kennedy were assassinated long ago; but it is the intricacies of their personal and political tales, how they dealt with betrayals, threats, and lies, and how their lives and missions intersected, where the meaning manifests itself. The facts are essential, but they are lumps of inert clay until the spirit moves them. These men, despite all their frailties, were moved by the spirit of compassion for others; they were men for others despite the risks to themselves. If this sounds too gushy to you, it could be because you are confusing them with most public figures whose primary concern is power, prestige, and self-survival at all costs.

This archive features recordings of Seminars conducted by David Bohm from 1986 to 1992 exploring the nature of thought and the thinking process. A transcript of the December 1989 Seminar edited by Dr. Bohm is titled, <i>Proprioception Of Thought</i>. As he notes, “‘Proprioception’ is a technical word, and you may not like it. You can use ‘self-perception of thought’, ‘self-awareness of thought’, ‘thought is aware of itself in action’.” A participant in the Seminar asked, “Why doesn’t the proprioception of thought operate? And how did that get separated from proprioception of the body?” Bohm responded: “Thought is more subtle than the body movements. It is further in the brain, and so on, so it could easily have been lost. But let me suggest, for the sake of a proposal, that in the tacit process of thinking maybe there is proprioception, just as there is in riding the bicycle.”

“[T]he purpose of the Trident campaign is not to stop the Trident submarine and missile system. Its purpose is to change ourselves—all of us—so that there will no longer be anyone to run the submarine or fire the missile.

This submarine which equals 7,296 Hiroshimas. How can anyone understand that?
</p>

Begin with a meditation: To understand Trident say the word “Hiroshima.” Reflect on its meaning for one second. Say and understand “Hiroshima” again. And again. And again. 7,296 times. Assuming you’re able to understand Hiroshima in one second, you’ll need more than two hours to understand Trident. That’s one Trident submarine. To understand the destructive power of the whole Trident fleet, it would take you more than 40 hours, devoting one second to each Hiroshima.
</p>
<p>
Your meditation is impossible. To understand Hiroshima alone would take a lifetime.
</p>
<p>
You <i>do</i> understand. Hiroshima was the end of our ability to imagine our destructive power, or to measure its consequences. Trident is the end of the world.
</p>
<p>
How does one live at the end of the world?
</p>
By beginning a new one. The power of thousands of Hiroshimas on their way to Trident submarines comes from the grip of an illusion: our own egos and the murderous security they seek. The force of truth and love, lived in their depths, is a force of unity, of life itself. That force is real. We need to join in a community committed to that nonviolent love force which is the power of the powerless. We need to test the truth of love by betting our lives on it in the world. If a community can experiment deeply enough in a nonviolent love force the White Train of Trident will be stopped. Love will stop the train. Love will stop Trident.

The context begins with the free existence of our Native nations and peoples, extending back to the beginning of our time through our oral histories and traditions, <em>contrasted</em> with the system of domination that was carried by ship across the ocean and imposed on everyone and everything. From that starting point we end up with a non-Christian view-from-the-shore with our Ancestors looking out at the invading ships sailing from Western Christendom, and a view-from-the-ship perspective, with the colonizers moving toward our Ancestors with the intention of establishing the Christian empire’s system of domination where it did not yet exist. Below we discuss the recent Vatican Statement on the Doctrine of Discovery with a view-from-the-shore perspective, while realizing that the Vatican officials wrote their statement with a view-from-the-ship (church) perspective.
